Special facts
The RSFSR fifty kopeks was struck for only two years: 1.4 million in 1921 and 8.2 million in 1922. In 1924 it gave way to the USSR fifty kopeks with a blacksmith.
Appearance
The poltinnik is a coin 26.67 mm across and weighing 10 g in .900 silver, noticeably larger than the 10, 15 and 20-kopeck change. The RSFSR arms on the obverse and the value at the centre of a five-pointed star on the reverse are set within beaded circles. The edge gives the pure silver content in zolotniks and dolyas and the mint-master's initials: "А·Г" appears on poltinniks of 1921 and 1922, "П·Л" only on those of 1922.
About the period
The RSFSR silver coins of 1921–1923 are the first Soviet coins. They were struck to the pre-war standard of weight and fineness but released into circulation only in 1924. More about the period “RSFSR 1921-1923 silver coinage”
