Special facts
The 1961-series ruble note stayed in circulation for three decades, from 1961 to 1991. Over that time, printing technology and materials changed more than once, so the note ended up with quite a few varieties — some of which are rare today and highly valued by collectors.
Watermark

Throughout all thirty years, ruble note paper carried a star watermark, usually tilted to the right. On some notes from issues 6 and 7, the stars tilt the other way — to the left. Collectors treat these as a separate variety, though it has little effect on value.
Font

Font 1 on top, font 2 below.
Plate type

Plate type A (with the "thorn") and plate type B.
Print type

Orlov printing on the left, offset printing on the right.
Paper type
1961-series notes were printed on two types of paper. The first is matte, greyish-yellow, and is less common. The second is white, glossy on one side, and is far more common. Different denominations switched paper type at different issues. Telling them apart by eye is difficult — it's more reliable to compare several notes side by side.
