Special facts

The Warsaw copper five-kopek piece of 1850–1856 was issued in small batches: about 40,000 were struck in 1853.

About the period

The coins of Alexander II belong to the time when small change got cheaper: after the Crimean War silver was leaving circulation, and the fineness of the small silver was lowered first to .750 and in 1867 to .500. The 1867 designs — small silver from 5 to 20 kopecks and copper from 1 to 5 kopecks — were struck unchanged until 1917. More about the period “Alexander II”, 1855 — 1881
