The Romanovs — family tree

The Romanovs ruled Russia from 1613 to 1917, more than three hundred years. The first tsar of the dynasty was the sixteen-year-old Mikhail Fyodorovich, elected by the Zemsky Sobor after the Time of Troubles; the last emperor was Nicholas II, who abdicated in March 1917.

In 1721 Peter I took the title of emperor, and the Tsardom of Muscovy became the Russian Empire. With the death of Peter II in 1730 the male line of the Romanovs died out: the throne passed to the descendants of Peter I's brother and daughters, and from Peter III onwards the rulers descended from Anna Petrovna and the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, who are also conventionally called Romanovs.

The catalogue covers coins from Peter I to Nicholas II, on which the rulers' portraits, arms and titles changed. The tree below shows every ruler of the dynasty, their consorts and the family members through whom the line of succession passed; a ruler's name leads to their coins.
