Canada — Issue of 1935

The first Bank of Canada notes appeared on 11 March 1935, the day the bank opened: from 1 to 1,000 dollars, smaller and more colourful than the Dominion notes. It is the only Bank of Canada series printed in two separate versions, in English and in French, the French notes being meant for Quebec.

The notes show the royal family and the fathers of the nation: George V on the 1 dollar, Queen Mary on the 2, the Prince of Wales on the 5, Princess Mary on the 10, eight-year-old Princess Elizabeth, the future queen, on the 20, the Duke of York, the future George VI, on the 50, the Duke of Gloucester on the 100, John A. Macdonald on the 500 and Wilfrid Laurier on the 1,000 dollars; the backs carry allegories of agriculture, transport, electric power and commerce. On 6 May 1935 a commemorative 25 dollars followed for the Silver Jubilee of George V.
