Special facts
The commemorative 20 dollars “A Historic Reign” was issued on 9 September 2015, the day Elizabeth II’s reign passed that of Queen Victoria and became the longest in Canadian history. The window holds the queen’s portrait from a 1951 photograph by Yousuf Karsh, the only one on Canadian notes showing her crowned, with her cypher below and a garland of 13 maple leaves, one for each province and territory.
About the period
The Frontier series is Canada’s first set of polymer notes: the 100 dollars appeared in November 2011, the 50 and 20 in 2012, and the 10 and 5 in 2013. A large transparent window holds a metallic portrait and a building that can be seen right through the note; the portraits on the face are the familiar ones.
