Appearance

A 100-rouble assignat of the first type: plain uncoloured paper and nothing printed on the back. Inside a border of small squares the number sits at top centre; below it are two ovals blind-embossed without ink. The left one shows a harbour with merchant ships, flags, cannon and cannonballs — the might of the state — the right one a tall rock above the sea, and between them stand a double-headed eagle and the arched motto "ПОКОИТЪ И ОБОРОНЯЕТЪ". The paper is embossed, with a watermark of words running round the edge. Size 190 × 250 mm; dates 1774–1785. From 1774 the number is printed three times — once at the top and twice at the bottom.

About the period

Assignats were the first Russian paper money. They began to be issued in 1769 on the decree of Catherine II, so that the treasury would need less silver. More about the period “Assignats”, 1769 — 1785
