About the period
The som is the national currency of Kyrgyzstan (officially the Kyrgyz Republic): it was introduced on 10 May 1993 in place of the Russian rouble and is divided into 100 tyiyn. In the early years small change was paper, and the National Bank issued circulation coins only in 2008–2009, from 1 tyiyn to 10 som, in a single set of designs that is still in use.
