Special facts
A dollar of 2005 for the 25th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope: having lost a leg to cancer, he ran more than 5,000 kilometres across half the country on an artificial leg in 1980, raising money to fight the disease. It is the first Canadian circulation coin to portray a Canadian citizen.
About the period
The coins of Elizabeth II were struck from 1953 to 2022, almost seventy years in which four portraits of the queen succeeded one another: by Mary Gillick (1953–1964), Arnold Machin (1965–1989), Dora de Pédery-Hunt (1990–2003), the first portrait by a Canadian sculptor, and Susanna Blunt (from 2003).
