About the period

The somoni was introduced on 30 October 2000 in place of the Tajik rouble and is divided into 100 dirams. The 1999 notes were printed by Giesecke+Devrient of Leipzig: dirams (1 to 50) and somoni (1 to 100). The 2010 series (3, 200 and 500 somoni) added new denominations, 2013 and 2017 brought security updates, and since 2018 new designs have been issued for the 10 to 500 somoni. Every note carries the facsimile signatures of the President and the Chairman of the National Bank, so a change of the bank's head creates separate varieties. The coins were struck at the Saint Petersburg Mint (2001–2006) and, from 2011, at the Kazakhstan Mint. More about the period “Republic of Tajikistan”, 2001 — to present
