Special facts
Nicholas II’s portrait rouble of 1895–1915, 20 grams of 900 silver. In 1896–1899 it was also struck in Paris and Brussels, and the edge inscription gives the pure silver weight, 4 zolotniks 21 dolyas, or 18 grams.
About the period
The coins of Nicholas II are gold-standard coins: the Witte reform of 1897 tied the rouble to gold, and gold coins circulated freely alongside credit notes until the First World War. More about the period “Nicholas II”, 1894 — 1917
