Special facts
The quarter-kopek of 1867–1881 weighing only 0.82 grams, the lightest copper coin of the reign, with the monogram of Alexander II. Until 1876 it was also struck at Yekaterinburg, then at Petersburg alone.
About the period
The coins of Alexander II belong to the time when small change got cheaper: after the Crimean War silver was leaving circulation, and the fineness of the small silver was lowered first to .750 and in 1867 to .500. The 1867 designs — small silver from 5 to 20 kopecks and copper from 1 to 5 kopecks — were struck unchanged until 1917. More about the period “Alexander II”, 1855 — 1881
