Canada — Charles III (2022 — to present)
The coins of Charles III: the king’s portrait by the Montreal artist Steven Rosati was unveiled on 14 November 2023, the king’s 75th birthday, at the mint in Winnipeg, and the first coin struck with it was the dollar of 2023. By December of that year the portrait had reached every circulating denomination, and the coins of Elizabeth II circulate alongside the new ones.
The denominations are as before, without the cent: 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents, the loonie and the toonie in multi-ply plated steel, with the familiar beaver, Bluenose, caribou, arms, loon and polar bear. Circulating commemoratives come out every year, usually in pairs, plain and with colour printing: for the centenaries of the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Supreme Court and the Royal Canadian Legion, and in honour of the painters Jean Paul Riopelle and Daphne Odjig and the writer Lucy Maud Montgomery. The mint has issued collector coins with the new portrait since December 2023.
