Canada — Issue of 1878-1887
The second issue of Dominion notes features governors general and their wives: the Countess of Dufferin on the 1 dollar of 1878 and the Earl of Dufferin on the 2 dollars, the Marquess of Lorne on the 4 dollars of 1882, and the Marquess and Marchioness of Lansdowne on the 2 dollars of 1887.
The 1878 backs bear the Great Seal of Canada and the city of redemption, and the colour of the serial number points to the city: blue, red, black or green. The unusual 4-dollar note of 1882 is the first Canadian note on watermarked paper, with “DOMINION OF CANADA” bands showing a rose, a thistle, a maple leaf and a shamrock. The back of the 1887 2 dollars shows Jacques Cartier arriving at Quebec.
